Blood Spatter Analysis 101:
Blood Spatter is a forensics method that uses a combination of physics, math, and biology to reconstruct violent crimes. Varitations in shape size and distribution of blood stains can help investigators figure out what happened. Key terms:
Parentdrop is the main drop of blood that strikes the surface. Satellite spatter is when a bunch of tiny droplets break upon impact. Spines and tails are the pointy edges that stick out from the main stain. These always point in the direction the blood traveled. Surface tension is what holds the blood together until a surface like carpet or concrete breaks them apart. It is also the reason why blood is commonly in the shape of circles or ovals. Categories of Bloodstain patterns:
Passive stains are drops created by gravity alone like drips or trails. Projected stains are from blood forced or propelled from pressure like an artery nose mouth or slung by a weapon. Impact spatter would be the stains created by force applied to a source of blood. Altered and transfered stains is when an existing pattern is changed. Void patterns are an empty blank space in a sptter pattern where the blood was blocked from an object or person.
